Sand Sculpture Festival
This year, the "Day of the Vibrant City" called into being by the Foundation will be celebrated in Cologne with a very special event. Under the motto "Cologne Invites the World", there will be a sand sculpture festival on the Kennedyufer near the Tanzbrunnen (an outdoor dance floor with a fountain in the centre). The event will be officially opened on July 10, 2004 - but there is still plenty to do in the run-up to the festival to ensure that the sand sculptures depicting buildings from twin towns of Cologne are ready on time. Alongside the Hagia Sophia (Istanbul) and the Sagrada Familia (Barcelona), a sand version of the skyline of Indianapolis will also rise into the sky above Cologne.
Many helpers and experts have already travelled to Cologne for this purpose. The project is being managed by the well-known sandcastle sculptor Dale Murdock. Together with his international team comprising members from Canada, Spain and France, Murdock is building huge wooden frames for the giant sand structures. The project also involves the movement of enormous amounts of sand. As the sand is not only spread on the ground but also has to be compacted to ensure the stability of the sculptures, deliveries are being made in several stages. |
